Saints Discussions previews the big rematch from last year’s NFC Championship Game between the New Orleans Saints and the Los Angeles Rams.
The long-awaited rematch between the New Orleans Saints and the Los Angeles is finally here. The Saints head down to the L.A. Coliseum to take on the defending the NFC Champions from last season. The team is seeking vengeance from their controversial defeat in last year’s NFC Championship game.
Both ball clubs are 1-0 and will be seeking to add to their win total when they face each other tomorrow afternoon. The Saints rush defense must revert to what made them number one against the run in 2018. Last week’s effort against the Houston Texans in Week 1 was a dismal performance. They gave up a total of 140 yards rushing against their opponents last week.
However, for the Saints, all hope is not lost. Stout defensive tackle David Onyemata returns to the Saints lineup after serving a one-game suspension in Week 1. His presence will be a boost to a Saints rush defense that is off to a rough start in 2019. In regards to their secondary, their hands will be full once again dealing with top-level wide receivers. Extra attention must be on Rams wide receiver Kooper Kupp.
If he is allowed to have a field day against the Saints secondary, the Rams will win this game plain and simple. Kupp did not play in both matchups between the Saints and Rams last year due to suffering a season-ending injury. Quarterback Drew Brees must be protected at times throughout this matchup. Their offensive line will be dealing with a player that is known for bringing pressure up the middle in Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald.
It has been proven on many different occasions that if Brees can sit comfortably in the pocket, he will pick an opposing defense apart. However, their offense must get Jared Cook involved in this football game. The last time the two franchises faced each other, wide receiver the Rams defense neutralized Michael Thomas for the majority of the contest.
Sean Payton must also utilize Alvin Kamara effectively in the open field as well. A linebacker covering Kamara in the passing game is a defensive coordinator’s worst nightmare. Hopefully, when this one is over, the Saints can put the controversial “Nola-No-Call” behind them. This is your Saints vs. Rams Week 2 preview.
