Mike McGlinchey Selected by the Saints in 2018 Re-Draft Article

NFL re-draft stories are one of the more popular pieces of content that sport websites, both large and small, love to produce. The aim of publishing an NFL re-draft article is to pretend that the teams go back in time and draft different players at the selections they were slotted to be in. The picks are based on how a player is producing two or three years removed from when they were drafted. In the latest re-draft mock by Bleacher Reporter writer Gary Davenport, he slotted the Saints to select offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey.

The Pick Then: Rashaad Penny, RB, San Diego State (by Seattle Seahawks)

The Pick Now: Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame

Back in 2018, the New Orleans Saints were still a legitimate Super Bowl contender. As such, they might have been better served just taking the best player available instead of trading up for Marcus Davenport, which not only didn’t pan out but also cost the Saints their first-rounder in 2019.

The Saints didn’t necessarily need help at offensive tackle in 2018. But if the Niners hadn’t thrown Mike McGlinchey into the starting lineup after selecting him ninth overall in 2018 and instead gave him some time to develop, perhaps he’d be better than the slightly above-average right tackle he is today.

That McGlinchey signed a five-year, $87.5 million contract with the Denver Broncos in free agency, this offseason says a lot more about how desperate teams are for even adequate tackles than McGlinchey as a player.

That’s all the more reason for the Saints to add him—whether they’d need him or not.”

In theory, Davenport’s notion makes a lot of sense, but the Saints could have used the upgrade at quarterback. At the time, the team was all in on Drew Brees adding a second Super Bowl title to his already stacked resume. They were coming off their first-ever division title since 2011 and wanted to add more impact players to help them go further in the postseason. The Saints had traded away future draft assets to select Marcus Davenport, who everyone thought had the potential to become an elite talent at the defensive end position.

When the Saints moved from 27 to 14, many believed they were preparing to select Brees’s successor Lamar Jackson. But it was the opposite when Commissioner Roger Goodell called Davenport’s name as the player being taken at 18. The former UTSA standout signed a one-year to join the Minnesota Vikings. As for Jackson, he became the Ravens’ quarterback of the future and would win the league’s Most Valuable Player award in 2019.
